The first master class took place in October 2007 with the title “The transmission of sound and vibration at building junctions” by Prof. E.(Eddy) Gerretsen in Dutch. It was a second time success in  2008.
After that, the first international master class on room acoustics took place in april 2009 by dr. A.C. Gade, followed by the third building acoustics master class by E. Gerretsen in may 2009. Another international master class on room acoustics took place by dr. H.J. Rindel in January 2010, dealing with room acoustical prediction modelling and in April 2010 with dr. E. Kahle on acoustics for the performing arts.

More information about past master classes can be found below:

Master Class Building Acoustics by E. Gerretsen
"Transfer of acoustical energy across junctions"
25 - 27 May 2011

The goal of this Master Class was to study building acoustics in depth. For three days, theoretical knowledge was gained and laboratory experiments were performed in the presence of leading world-renown professional prof. ir. E. Gerretsen. The focus of this Master Class was on determining and interpreting the transfer of acoustical energy across the junction of structural elements in buildings. The Master Class was complemented by workshops in calculation models and measuring sound (vibrational power transmission across a junction and radiation efficiency of structural elements.)

Master Class Room Acoustics for the Performing Arts
by E. Kahle
12 April - 14 April 2010

Last April the third master class on room acoustics took place. After A.C. Gade and J.H. Rindel master E. Kahle shared his approach on designing room acoustics in relation to architectural criteria. Interesting discussions arise about the implications of room design on the resulting acoustic quality and the correlation between the objective criteria and the perceptual factors. The participants ‘experienced’ this correlation by a listening test that was integral part of the master class. During a concert of the Symphony Orchestra of New Russia they filled in questionnaires of which the results can be found here.

One of the participant’s responses: “In a scientific environment you can breathe free from your daily work, concentrate on the information presented and exchange ideas and findings with colleagues from all over the world”.

Master Class Room Acoustic Prediction Modelling
by J.H. Rindel
27 January - 29 January 2010

In January the Master Class on room acoustic prediction modelling took place. The international group of participants joined the three days session with master dr. J.H. Rindel. The participants exchanged their experiences with modelling different kinds of spaces using various software tools, etc. A workshop in modelling and simulating the acoustics of the open plan office of the Laboratorium voor Akoestiek where the master class took place, showed the difficulties of prediction modelling, the interpretation of the results and the use of auralisation. Auralisation was proven to be a magnificent tool during a Dolby Surround demonstration of the Erato project on Roman theaters and the Århus concert hall in Denmark using Odeon.

The Master Class has been complemented by a workshop in modelling and simulating the acoustics of a space. Besides that, a guest presentation was given by Msc. C.C.J.M. Hak on the subject of room acoustic scale model research. A paper about the workshop results presented at ICA 2010 can be found here. The results are also summarised in a powerpoint presentations with sound examples and can be downloaded here [38 Mb].

Master Class Room Acoustics by A.C. Gade
"Acoustics for Symphonic Music"
22 - 24 April 2009

April 2009 the first international Master Class by dr. A.C. Gade took place at the Laboratorium voor Akoestiek of Eindhoven University of Technology. Together with the 8 participants many room acoustical issues have been discussed in three days. Also the workshop with Big Band Lier gave new insights into stage acoustics.

One of the participants response: "Very intensive days that took a lot of energy, but also gave a lot of energy in return! All aspects were treated: theory, cases, measuring and modeling. We reached the top and I enjoyed it enormously".
