Projects in the field of room acoustics concern fundamental and practical subjects related to the investigation of room acoustical parameters in the laboratory, on scale or in practice. New or existing measurement techniques are used to study accuracy, reliability and reproducibility of measured room acoustical parameters. Also, the effect of architectural features on measured room acoustical parameters are studied.

For a large period of time, acousticians have been focusing on the acoustics in the hall from a listener’s point of view. More recently, the importance of good acoustics on stage is recognized and investigated. This is referred to as stage acoustics. To study the influence of the stage environment on stage acoustics, room acoustical measurements have been performed in 7 Dutch concert halls by two master students . During a tour of the Dutch Student Orchestra (NSO) musicians and conductor filled in questionnaires. Comparison has been made between subjective and objective parameters. Results of the research have been presented in a scientific paper (download paper).

The sound absorption of ceiling panels is dependant on the way  panels are mounted against the ceiling. More often, islands of panels are used combined with exposed concrete floor slabs. In that case, the panels are hung loose from the ceiling. Measurements have been performed in the laboratory and in practice to find the effect of loosely hung panels.

For some room acoustical measurements an artificial head is used to measure spatial parameters. In this project, a comparison has been made between acoustical parameters measured with an omnidirectional microphone and an artificial head. The goal of the research was to see whether an artificial head can be used to measure parameters that are normally measured with an omnidirectional microphone. An interesting finding was the influence of the direction of the listener's ears on measured room acoustical parameters. Results of the research have been presented in a scientific paper (download paper).
