On the 12th of Februari 2010 prof. ir. Eddy Gerretsen said farewell to his
professional career as a specialist on acoustics at the research institute TNO
in Delft and as full professor at the Eindhoven University of
Technology. During a goodbye symposium various speakers discussed the history
and state of the art of acoustics, especially focusing on building and room
acoustics. Please find the presentations of the symposium below. Eddy Gerretsen has been active in the field of acoustics at TNO
for 40 years after graduating at Applied Physics at the Delft University of
Technology. During his career at TNO one of his favourite projects has been
the control of noise of cross motorcycles. Motorcyclists were packed with
measurement gear and monitored along the track. Probably it is no surprise
that there was no correlation found between the amount of noise and the final
position in the race. Dampers were designed to make the motor cycles more
quiet. Many other projects followed. |

Also, he was involved in the development of calculation models in building acoustics, resulting in an active role on the development of the well known EN 12354 standards series. One of his breakthroughs has been the introduction of the vibrational power transmission across junctions Kij. He now further develops the standards for lightweight building structures and noise of building services within the CEN working groups. As a full professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology from 1994, he has been teaching “Structure borne sound in buildings” and guided many graduate and PhD students. Eddy Gerretsen also teaches the Advanced Course on Acoustics in Antwerp and a course in practical building acoustics at the SKB (Stichting Kennisoverdracht Bouwfysica). Besides that he was the first to give several successful master classes organised by Level Acoustics from 2007 to 2009. After retirement Eddy Gerretsen will remain active in some CEN working groups. Also, he will be visiting the Laboratorium voor Akoestiek in Eindhoven from time to time. It will still be possible to contact him via his universities email: e.gerretsen@tue.nl Symposium presentations (in Dutch): Links: |
