Concert hall design demand for accurate predictions of room acoustical parameters. In addition to the statistical calculation models of Sabine and Eyring, and geometric calculation models using ray tracing, it is possible to predict the acoustics by scale model measurements. An acoustical scale model is a physical model of the room, for instance on a scale of 1:10, where the measurements are performed with specialised (scaled) equipment. Materials used in the model have the same absorption and scattering properties to scale as normal material in the field.

In the Laboratorium voor Akoestiek, Level Acoustics maintains a permanent scale model measurement setup for the measurement of various room acoustical parameters. It is also possible to perform sound absorption measurements in the scaled reverberation room.

A 1:10 acoustical scale model of the
main auditorium of Casa da Musica
  has been used to research
  reflection patterns.
